The Arena Football League appears to be about to fold.
A number of media outlets are reporting the league's imminent demise, including the Albany, N.Y., Times-Union, which noted that Tampa Bay president Jim Borghesi posted on his Facebook page, "The AFL will be having a press conference to announce that the league will not be returning."
Members of the Soul's front office could not be immediately reached for comment last night. If the league is calling it quits, the defending champion Soul will be the answer to a trivia question.
The dominoes started falling in earnest in late July 2008, when Commissioner David Baker resigned 2 days before the Arena Bowl championship, which the Soul hung on to win, 59-56, over San Jose. It appears as if it will be the last AFL game in the league's 23-year existence.
The league canceled the 2009 season shortly before Christmas, and many players and coaches complained about a lack of communication. Every franchise was losing money at an alarming clip. New Orleans and Los Angeles, thought to be among the AFL's strongest teams, already folded.
The Soul players and coaches received their championship rings in the mail. The status of a concert promised by co-owner Jon Bon Jovi to celebrate the team's championship obviously also is in peril.
