When Cape May officials decided this year to move colonies of feral cats away from the beach in their Victorian town, they had no idea of the smelly problem that would result.
The area around the Cape May Convention Hall has been having problems with brazen and numerous skunks. Mickey McGlade fears they'll scare regulars away from her seaside restaurant.
The cats were removed because they were disturbing endangered shore birds, including piping plovers. But now it's believed they were also scaring away skunks, who have shown up since the cats were taken away.
But some in town fear that if the skunks can be rounded up and carted off, there would be a new animal problem: rats.
