Empty - Ray LaMontagne

I never learned to count my blessings, I choose instead to dwell in my disasters.

The Perfect Crime?

Sprignfield residents looked out the window last night to see a bright orange garbage truck moving so quickly that it nearly tipped over on a tight curve.

The driver avoided that, but crashed into a large tree in her yard, shoved a parked car into the roadway and then continued down the block.

Before the rampage was over, the truck , stolen from a disposal company in nearby Springfield , was used to demolish fences and smash three cars. It hit a utility pole, knocking out electricity to a few homes. It uprooted a large tree and dragged it for about a block, scattering branches and parts of the trunk along the road.

The truck was found abandoned about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they have no suspects.

Monkey Business

A South Korean tourist has filed a formal complaint against a monkey he says stole his reading glasses during his visit to the Hindu holy city of Varanasi in northern India.

Kim Dang Hoon says he opened his hotel room window for fresh air when the monkey made his move. "He headed straight to the table where my glasses were kept and took it away," Kim said in the statement.

Part of the frame later was recovered by hotel staff and Kim said he filed the report so he can make a damages claim on his travel insurance.

On Tuesday, police combed Varanasi's alleys searching for the monkey. "It is difficult to trace the monkey but I am trying my best to locate the rogue," said investigating officer Inspector Govind Singh.

"But we can't do anything. We cannot shoot them or beat them as Hindus worship monkeys," he said.

Blast From The Past

Not only is that Jon Stewart, but it's also Juliana Hatfield. Oh, the memories...

"What else can I do? Kill myself?"

The longtime chairman of the Roger Williams University board admitted Monday to using the N-word during a board meeting, saying it "kind of slipped out."

"I apologized for that," Ralph Papitto, 80, said in an interview on WPRO-AM. "What else can I do? Kill myself?"

Papitto became irate when he discussed pressures to make the board more diverse, at one point using the slur to refer to black candidates to the board.

"There was, like, this complete and utter silence, and I was shocked beyond belief and very angry," Roberts said.

"The first time I heard it was on television or rap music or something," Papitto told WPRO. (hahahaha...right)

Shin Splints

Lawrence and Michael Lenahan were gored simultaneously by a bull, which also injured 11 other people last Thursday.

"I started yelling at my brother to show him I was bleeding everywhere but he showed me he was bleeding everywhere," said Lawrence Lenahan, a 26-year-old Air Force captain from Hermosa Beach, Calif., in a telephone interview from his hospital bed.

He was gored in the buttocks, while Michael Lenahan, 23, of Philadelphia, was injured in his leg and was recovering well from surgery at the same hospital.

Michael Lenahan had recently overcome testicular cancer that had spread to his abdomen and the brothers were celebrating.

"He decided he wanted to live life to the fullest. He said 'Once a year I'll do something exciting.' And he did," said their father, Larry Lenahan.

"I remember looking back and thinking I was in trouble," Lawrence Lenahan said.

Touching...

A judge on Monday approved a $660 million settlement between the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and more than 500 alleged victims of clergy abuse, the largest payout yet in the nationwide sex abuse scandal.

The amount averages a little more than $1.3 million per plaintiff, although individual payouts will vary according to the severity and duration of the abuse alleged.

The deal settles all 508 cases that remained against the archdiocese, which also paid $60 million in December to settle 45 cases that weren't covered by sexual abuse insurance.

The settlements push the total amount paid out by the U.S. church since 1950 to more than $2 billion, with about a quarter of that coming from the Los Angeles archdiocese.

Hey Man, Nice Shot

Robin Munis was shot in the head with one gunshot that came from outside the Old Chicago restaurant where she had been performing just after midnight, Cheyenne police Capt. Jeff Schulz said. No one else in the restaurant was hurt. They were looking for her estranged husband, a National Guardsman, who they said had sniper training.

Witnesses saw her husband, David Munis, in the area, but no one has reported seeing the shot fired, Schulz said. No weapon was found, but Schulz said investigators believe a rifle was used.

The couple had recently separated, and Robin Munis, 40, of Cheyenne, had complained about receiving harassing calls from her husband as recently as Friday, Schulz said.
